G. Woodson, Black History Month is a month of remembrance dedicated to those who influenced the lives and social conditions of African Americans,
namely former President Abraham Lincoln and former slave, abolitionist, orator, statesman and reformer, Frederick Douglass. As we reflect on the social journey of freedom and equality, it is appropriate to remember a powerful excerpt from one of the famous speeches delivered by Frederick Douglass on August 4, 1857. That speech began, “if there is no struggle, there is no progress.” Parallel those words to our charter school society today – many of the early pioneers of the charter school movement struggled financially, politically and socially as they fought to promote and protect the power of educational choice – the power of educational freedom. Today, more than 1.3 million children are attending over 4,500 charter schools across the nation demonstrating that those early struggles have resulted in the advancement of public education across the country.
